Paper Clip Measuring

Target Age:
Early Three-Year Old
Materials You Will Need:
paper clips
What To Do:

This activity will help your child understand the concept of measurement. Tell your child that there are many ways to measure things. Show your child a ruler and tape measure and explain how these work. Discuss other ways people measure, for example, horses are measured with hands. People sometimes measure spaces by counting the number of steps it takes to get from one place to another.

Show your child the items you've gathered to measure. Lay the first item in front of your child, show your child how to lay paper clips from end to end, then count to see how many paper clips it takes to measure the item. Have your child practice with the rest of the objects. You can draw a picture of each item and record the number of paper clips it took to measure them as a record of your activity.

"Awesome. You could then graph your results with a bar graph to show "the most" paperclips item, and thus the largest. Then, extend that into addition and subtraction problems. "
