Tally Time

Target Age:
Late Four-Year Old
Materials You Will Need:
pencil, paper, clipboard
What To Do:
With a ruler, draw several lines on a sheet of paper, (about 1 inch apart). Draw a picture of a door, a window, a bed, a bathtub, or other common things found in your home. Have your child walk to each room of your home and record the number of each item found using tally marks. You'll need to show your child how to make a tally mark for each item to 4, then how to cross off the 5th tally to make a group of 5. This activity shows your child a way to record a running quantity of items as well as practice counting by 5's.
