Cooking Together

Target Age:
Early Infant
What To Do:

The next time you are preparing a meal in the kitchen, place your infant in a bouncy seat on the counter, close to you at all times. Make sure your child is safely fastened in the seat secured on the counter. Tell your infant what you are doing as you measure ingredients and make your meal. Infants enjoy being involved and part of  your daily routines.

"I totally agree with the bouncy seat on the counter thing...not safe! But my husband too will bring my son into the kitchen and show him what I am doing. My son LOVES it! I think it is a great idea minus the whole bouncy seat/counter thing."
Kelli S, Escondido, CA
"This is completely unsafe and the author should not be writing about children's activities. "
Erika M, Lodi, NJ
"I began performing this activity by default since it's the only way I can get breakfast made and I love explaining things to my daughter. The only difference is, I have a big pillow in her stroller and have her lie there so she can accompany me to the refridgerator or dish washer and I can keep her farther away from the stove easily."
Taylor W, Charlotte, NC
"My LO loves this, but instead of using a bouncy seat (I agree doesn't seem too safe), my husband holds her. This lets her get a little closer to the action and she can actually look in the pots/ pans from a safe distance."
Mika V, Santa Barbara, CA
"I can't believe you would suggest putting an infant bouncy on the counter top. "
Kristy W, Edgewater, MD
"I would argue that unless you've got an infant seat built in to your counter, having a baby on the counter is not a good idea. Wearing the baby (or even just putting the baby in a bouncy seat on the floor and talking to him/her) while cooking and doing the things you describe is much safer."

"This is a great idea! I can't wait to try it!"
